“Blackberry Babes in Nigeria”: Arthur Goldstuck Discusses African Economics and Cellphone Aspirations

Tech-Savvy ParentingArthur Goldstuck, co-author of Tech-Savvy Parenting: A Guide to Raising Safe Children in a Digital World, recently appeared on the SABC News Business Review to speak about cellphone usage in Africa with Francis Herd.

Herd says that cellphones are “The African continent’s status symbol of choice,” and calls on Goldstuck to unpack a recent study of mobile phone users across five African countries: Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, Uganda and South Africa.

Goldstuck discusses the brands that Africans buy or get as hand-me-downs. He says, “It’s economics, on the one hand, but aspirations on the other hand” that shape trends in usage and brand appeal. He speaks about the phenomenon of “Blackberry Babes in Nigeria” to illustrate this:
