Shafiq Morton: No Offense Could Ever Justify the Intimidation and Assault of ZP Dala
Shafiq Morton, author of Imtiaz Sooliman and the Gift of the Givers: A Mercy to All, was recently quoted in an article about the attack on author ZP Dala at the Time of the Writer Festival in Durban.
Dala, first-time author of What about Meera, was assaulted by three men after she expressed her admiration for Salman Rushdie’s writing style.
Authors wishing to add their name in support of Dala, see PEN South Africa’s open letter: Violent Intimidation of Writers Must Not be Tolerated.
Morton says no offense could be great enough to justify violent intimidation.
Read the article:
Cape-based journalist Shafiq Morton described the incident as ‘a despicable act of cowardly urban terror’, and a ‘total violation of Dala’s constitutional rights’.
“While a person may harbour misgivings, and even hurt, about the content of Rushdie’s Satanic Verses, nothing can ever justify intimidation and assault as a response to it,” he said.
