How to Fix South Africa: Education Can Pull the Country Straight – Jonathan Jansen (Video)

How to Fix South Africa's SchoolsJonathan Jansen, co-author of How to Fix South Africa’s Schools: Lessons from Schools that Work and rector and vice-chancellor at UFS, recently spoke to News24 about his view of education in South Africa.

Jansen begins by saying: “I’m not optimistic about the country, I’m not optimistic about its leaders, I’m not optimistic about the economy, I’m not optimistic about a lot of stuff. What I’m optimistic about is that if we invest at the lower end of the social system, in this case young people in primary and high schools, and you really put in them a burning desire to study and enjoy science and mathematics, then I think we still can over time pull the country straight.”

He goes on to speak about the importance of investing heavily in children at an early stage, and the hope that this yields for the country. He shares some examples of young people who have been led to believe in their own abilities through education at The Centre of Science and Technology (COSAT), a school in Khayelitsha that gives focused training in mathematics and science.
