Selfie (and Groufie) Etiquette: Arthur Goldstuck Shares 10 Tips

Tech-Savvy ParentingTech-Savvy Parenting: A Guide to Raising Safe Children in a Digital World co-author Arthur Goldstuck has listed 10 elements of good selfie (and groufie, the new word for selfies taken with a group of people) etiquette in a column for Business Day.

Goldstuck notes that it is important to take these into account “for the sake of both personal reputation and career mobility” and advises selfie takers avoid duck-face poses, “showing off your expensive taste” and oversharing intimate situations, among other things.

But it was still a big leap from the word becoming respectable to the action itself shedding its narcissistic image. For that, you can blame Ellen DeGeneres, who choreographed the most famous group selfie yet at this year’s Oscars when she roped in a bunch of actors and the new Samsung Galaxy S5 smartphone. Her tweet of the photo became the most retweeted post yet on Twitter and is estimated to have been worth $1m in marketing value to Samsung.
