Alan Knott-Craig Jr’s Mission to Provide Free Wi-Fi in South Africa Continues

Really, Don't Panic!Moenie stres nie!Alan Knott-Craig Jr, believes in free public Wi-Fi, and is heading up a new NGO, Isizwe Project, that’s already active in five sites in South Africa.

Knott-Craig Jr, author of Really, Don’t Panic!, says more households in South Africa have access to Wi-Fi devices than people realise. Isizwe Project delivers free Wi-Fi in Tshwane, Stellenbosch, Atlantis and Robertson, so far, and Knott-Craig says the service has seen over 111 000 sessions, recorded by 20 000 unique users, in the first few months – with no marketing.

In an interview with IT Web, Knott-Craig Jr reveals the three main benefits of free Wi-Fi:

Knott-Craig Jr believes Wi-Fi has three major benefits. Firstly, there’s already a critical mass of Wi-Fi-enabled devices in the hands of those that need connectivity, and the number is growing fast. “Think of all the second-hand BlackBerrys, the old laptops that get passed down. We estimate that over 50 percent of households have access to a WiFi device,” he says.
